As the regional education hub, Singapore is a hotbed of learning institutes that cater to students of all ages. Despite their differences in teaching approach and curriculum, schools in Singapore generally fall into the following major categories:

Singapore’s government schools provide her citizens with heavily subsidised education for children starting from six years old at the primary one level, which is compulsory for all citizens, all the way to Junior College. Such schools follow the national Singapore-Cambridge GCE syllabus which is often recognised as one of the most academically vigorous education systems in the world and widely accepted by most local and foreign tertiary institutes, standing them in good stead to get into the university of their choice.

Where there is a high concentration of expatriates in a city, there will be demand for international schools. As a global city and key financial hub, Singapore is exactly that and is home to over twenty international schools located all over the country. These pre-university schools often encourage a holistic approach to education and mainly offer unique curriculum that follows their home country (for those country specific international schools such as Singapore American School, Australian International School and Canadian International School) or international curriculum, such as Cambridge International and International Baccalaureate (IB), to provide their students with an international education. These qualifications are recognised internationally by most local and foreign tertiary institutes, which stands them in good stead to get into the university of their choice.

All private schools in Singapore are governed by the Council of Private Education (CPE) and require EduTrust Certification, a quality assurance scheme administered by CPE for private schools, in order to recruit foreign students. With close to 300 private schools in Singapore offering a wide variety of courses that range from preparation for admission to government schools entrance tests all the way to degrees, private schools play a useful role in society by filling in the educational gaps found in government schools. They mostly cater to foreign children who would like to either search for a better future overseas or avoid the gruelling and merciless education system in their home country, such as the Gao Kao in China.

With the strong international recognition of Singapore’s education system, it comes as no surprise most private schools at the pre-tertiary level either prepare students for entrance tests to Singapore government schools or follow the local curriculum and prepare students for major Singapore examinations such as the PSLE, Singapore-Cambridge GCE ‘O’ Level and Singapore-Cambridge GCE ‘A’ Level exams. These schools tend to have a strong focus on academics and often offer specific language proficiency classes that tie in to their main courses.

Private universities that offer bachelor’s degrees on the other hand generally consist of a large percentage of both local and foreign students. This melting pot of students from various countries and culture provides its students with a unique opportunity to build up their international contacts and network while pursuing their higher education.
